Every year it is a tradition to watch our most favorite Christmas movies to get in the holiday spirit. However with watching the same movies, we also forget that there are still many great movies out there unwatched. Below is a list of 10 movies recommended by the students of Oconomowoc High School that they loved watching during Christmas time, that you possibly may have not seen before. If this is the case, read along, pick out your favorites and watch these awesome Christmas movies before the holidays end. Nothing says Christmas more than a great cheerful holiday movie.

  1. Die Hard

1988 Action/Thriller 2hr 11m R

When first hearing about this movie, it may seem like it is not a Christmas movie. Although it does take place around Christmas time. On Christmas Eve, a New York City policeman, John McClane (Bruce Williams) goes to visit his estranged wife and two daughters. McClane joins his wife at a holiday party in the headquarters of the Japanese-owned business she works for. Although, when the festivities are interrupted by a group of terrorists who take over, McClane realizes there is no one else to save the hostages and his wife but him. Die Hard is not a typical Christmas movie, but an action-packed thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat, while still in the Christmas spirit.

  1. While You Were Sleeping

1995 Comedy/Drama/Romance 1hr 43m PG

If you are looking for a funny, happy, amazingly cute, romantic Christmas movie, this is the perfect one. This movie is about a girl named Lucy (Sandra Bullock), who rescues her longtime secret crush Peter, from the path of an oncoming train. At the hospital, the doctors announce that Peter is in a coma, and a misplaced comment from Lucy causes Peter´s family to assume she is his fiancee. When Lucy doesn’t correct them, the family takes her in and loves her. The movie gets even more complicated when Lucy starts to fall for Peter´s brother, Jack. This movie is a perfect drama and romance movie for the holidays that is highly recommended. You will not regret watching it.

  1. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation

1989 Comedy 1hr 37m PG-13

An old classic, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation is a hilarious family Christmas movie you don’t want to miss. The Griswolds are preparing for a family seasonal celebration and things aren’t turning out this year like Clark Griswold promised they would. Instead of the ¨best Christmas ever,¨ Clark turns Christmas into a line of disasters, along with his obnoxious family guests. This is a film about how one big family´s plans turned into one big disaster. This fun family movie is definitely one you should check out this Christmas.

  1. The Holiday  

2006 Comedy/Drama/Romance PG-13 2h 18m

Instead of staying home for Christmas, two girls decide to spend it in a different country to get away from home. A Christmas movie like no other, The Holiday is about two women, Iris Simpkins (London) and Amanda Woods (Los Angeles) from two different countries troubled with harsh guy-problems. While meeting on a website, the girls (Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet) who have never met each other before decide they need to get away from their hard home lives. They decide to swap homes in each other’s countries, where they both unexpectedly meet a new guy and fall in love. This is an incredible, romantic and beautiful Christmas movie you need to see.

  1. Home Alone 2

1992 Adventure/Comedy 2hrs PG

Of course everyone knows the classic ¨Home Alone¨ and have most likely seen it. But have you ever considered watching the sequel, Home Alone 2? This movie happens to be another huge mistake of the McCallister family. The family is traveling to Florida, and Kevin McCallister loses track of his father at the airport and mistakenly gets on a plane headed for New York City. Now alone in a big city, Kevin discovers the Sticky Bandits are on the loose, and he struggles to stop them from robbing an elderly man´s toy store before Christmas. With Kevin being his normal, funny, secretly smart destructive self, this movie is definitely one you need to see this Christmas.

  1. Holiday In Handcuffs

2007 Romance/Comedy 1hr 30m PG

Kidnapping in a Christmas movie? This film is an usual romantic comedy you definitely want to see. A struggling artist working as a waitress wants to impress her family this Christmas. She feels she needs to bring home something to them. While thinking of this, the waitress kidnaps one of her customers to bring home and meet her parents. Although, she soon starts to see the man she brings home differently and may have feelings for the man she kidnapped. This unusual, extremely funny and odd movie will give you a different feel this Christmas.  How often to woman kidnap men to bring home for Christmas?  I bet you have never seen anything like this before, and you need to check it out.

  1. Christmas with the Kranks

2004 Comedy/Family 1hr 39m  PG

If you are looking for one of the craziest, amusing family christmas movies, this would be the one. This film is about a family of three (The Kranks), and the parents daughter Blair who is not able to spend Christmas with them this year. Luther and Nora Krank become sad and decide to go on a cruise instead, and not celebrate Christmas. The neighbors soon become mad, and a battle of wits between the Kranks and their neighbors quickly escalates. Without warning, they soon get a call from Blair, who says she now is coming home for Christmas. Now the Kranks have less than 24 hours to get themselves and all the families on Hemlock Street back in the proper Christmas spirit. This movie will put you in total Christmas spirit with your family and make you laugh as well.

  1. The Polar Express

2004 Animation/Adventure/Family 1hr 40m G

Hands down, one of the best Christmas movies of all time. As a young boy is waken by a train on Christmas eve, he soon is stunned to see the Polar Express outside his house. He shyly gets on and embarks on a magical adventure to the North Pole. While on this incredible adventure he makes new friends, explores the North Pole, drives the train, encounters ghosts, learns about bravery and will gain the true spirit of Christmas. This magical, amazing, top-notch movie will give you enormous Christmas spirit. Starring Tom Hanks, Chris Coppola and many more astonishing actors, this movie is something you definitely need to watch every Christmas.

  1. How the Grinch Stole Christmas

2000 Comedy/Family/Fantasy 1hr 44m PG

Starring Jim Carrey, Taylor Momsen, and many more, this movie is always a favorite. From the Dr. Seuss classic book, this movie is about finding Christmas spirit for everyone. On the outskirts of Whoville, there was a green, revenge-seeking, Grinch who planned on ruining the Christmas holiday for all the citizens of the town. With a small girl who becomes his one and only friend, the Grinch may change this Christmas for the good. If you have not yet seen this adorable Christmas movie yet, it is highly recommended by many.

  1. Elf

PG 2003 Fantasy/Romance 1hr 37m

Will Ferrell stars as Buddy in Elf, one of the most favorite classic Christmas movies of all time. This movie is about Buddy, who was accidentally transported to the North Pole as a toddler and was raised to adulthood by elves. Buddy soon feels he does not fit in, and goes on a quest to New York City to find his real dad. If you ever wanted to know what it was like to be a lost, child-like elf in the big city, this movie is for you. This humorous, heartwarming, and cheerful movie will definitely bring you Christmas cheer.  If you haven’t seen this movie yet, you are missing out.
