Day and night social media keeps our world spinning, and never stops to sleep or take a break. Think about it, we’re always in constant contact with everyone all over in the world, and even when we’re not, “push notifications” are there to encourage you to come back and check up on your favorite football player or musician. But is staying as connected as much as we are always a good thing?

On its launch date, Twitter stated it’s point was meant to “share what you’re doing at any given moment of the day with other people online” to a brief extent. In other words Twitter is a powerful social media networking tool meant to be used for both personal and businesses use.

Ironically, Facebook has become a spitting image of a lot of it’s competitors. But that wasn’t what Facebook was originally intended to be used for. Facebook was initially intended to be a place for university students to gather on the web (stated Mark Zuckerberg CEO of Facebook in 2012) . And back when there was a Facebook Newsroom update, you could join groups in your university, under your majors, classes, clubs, Greek life, or dorm to share news, photos, and events. You know, the stuff you can already currently do on Facebook.  I’m not saying change isn’t good! As times change so will the people and technology that are part of that time, but is that change always for the good? Facebook is one of the largest leading examples of this in the social world.

“Social Media is piped into our technology” said Joseph Moylan Oconomowoc High School principal. “We as a world are connected farther out than ever before, and this can wreck the death of relationship,” stated Moylan. “Social media can publicize your work and get it out there for everyone to see, similar to how your articles are broadcasted. For my generation it’s a good way to connect with old friends. But for all current generations, social media has desensitized us, for example we send more photo’s of our self that reflect in a negative way. Some of these app’s are creating a false sense of safety.” He then went on to point out some of the app’s he didn’t agree on, including snapchat, for it’s sense of false safety with the timer on how long a snap can be viewed, and seeing if someone has screenshotted a photo of yours. Kik, since it has been known to be used primarily as an impersonation website and consists of inappropriate group chats.

No matter what side of the spectrum your opinion falls on, whether that be if social media helps or hurts us, there’s one thing we know for certain: the digital age is upon us, and it’s here to stay. What once started with dial up AOL, chatrooms and Craigslist has become almost an intangible marketplace and media filled with little digital personas that interact within them (our social media accounts).

Regardless of the opportunities, the doors to social media have opened and we need to be reminded that it is dangerous. “Smart now is different than smart before,” stated Moylan. “There used to be people who specialized in mathematics, or someone known as a mathematician. Nowadays it’s all within the reach of a button to any weird fact you want. Real life application, that’s what makes you smart today.”
