We asked and you voted this week’s winner of the “Athlete of the week” poll is Sydney Dawson! Sydney is a 17 year old senior who skis for the varsity ski racing team here at OHS. Sydney has been skiing since she was four years old, and started racing only five years ago. Skiing, has always been a huge part of her life, and with being named the varsity team’s captain it only means that much more to her.

“I don’t think I’ve ever regretted joining ski team, It has been the most rewarding experience I’ve had the honor of being a part of,” Sydney stated. And why would she, being voted captain and being on the varsity team for three years is a great achievement for Sydney.

Sydney’s coaches, both Lauren Levy and Lisa Petelensik are her biggest role models in skiing. “My coach is one of my biggest inspirations, not only does she encourage me to do my best, but she also makes the entire ski season fun. She is not just a coach, but also a friend. I am honored to have been on a team with her for the past three years” Sydney stated. Sydneys peers and coaches have been a huge influence for her to try her hardest everyday. Sydney’s goal for her team this year is to push everyone to be their best and to place in the state meet at the end of the season.

In having such amazing grades the past three years, every year Sydney has received the scholar athlete award, with hopes for yet another one by the end of the school year. Outside of skiing Sydney has high hopes to attend the University of Minnesota Twin cities, to pursue her dreams of becoming a traveling nurse. Sydney has great experience in the nursing field, and is currently working for the three pillars nursing home as a CNA (certified nursing assistant).

Sydney is very involved in school  with NHS, Spanish honor society, broadcasting club, varsity cheerleader, and is in various AP and IB classes.
